Honda Accord 40th Anniversary
This summer marks the 40th anniversary of the Honda Accord. We have to say, some things only get better with age. Like a fine wine or a gourmet cheese, the Honda Accord has grown more sophisticated and more refined every year. So, to celebrate the Honda Accord’s 40th anniversary, let’s take a moment to look back through Honda Accord history and see how this best-selling car has evolved over the years.
Honda Accord History Highlights
The Honda Accord was first introduced in 1976 as a three-door hatchback. That boxy shape may not have much in common with the sleek lines of today’s Accord, but the qualities that make the Honda Accord special were there from the start. In the midst of the 1970s oil crises, its 34 miles per gallon rating was a major selling point. Yet it also stood out for its refined handling and fun-to-drive nature. And even in 1976, the Honda Accord was packed with cutting-edge technology. At the time, those modern innovations included things like a rear window defogger, intermittent wipers, and a locking gas cap.
Ahead Of Its Time
In 1981, the Honda Accord was briefly available with the world’s first automatic in-car navigation system. This was nothing like a modern GPS-based system. It used a gyroscope and actual maps printed on transparent plastic, which the driver had to physically insert behind the screen. It didn’t really catch on at the time.
The Honda Accord also set a trend as one of the first Japanese cars to be built in the U.S. In 1982, Honda began assembling the Accord at a brand-new plant in Ohio. To this day, the Honda Accord is still assembled at that same Marysville, Ohio plant.
The 1995 Honda Accord was the first model to offer a more powerful V-6 engine option. This generation was also acclaimed for how well it handled.
Safety With Style
In 2008, the Honda Accord took another technological step forward by introducing two new safety advancements. It featured Honda’s ACE body structure and Vehicle Stability Control.
The Present Day
And now we come to the current-generation Honda Accord. The 2016 Honda Accord is larger, sportier, and still a best-seller. With stylish new lighting and rims, two powerful engines, and an incredibly comfortable cabin, the 2016 Honda Accord is a winner. It also introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the Honda lineup.
