Events on the Weekend after Christmas 2019 in Chicago

The wheel of time rolls mercilessly onward, and eventually comes the day that the year’s Christmas has passed again. Luckily, the end of Christmas doesn’t mean the end of holiday joy. Not just yet, anyway.

A lot of people have taken the Thursday and Friday after Christmas off this year, which nicely bridges the gap from holiday to weekend, resultingly in an extended break from the toils of typical daily life. So what can you do to make the most of this time? We all want to round out 2019 in a pleasant fashion, don’t we?

The good news is that magic will still be in the air after Santa has retired to the North for another year; you just have to know where to look. You probably already know about the big City of Chicago Christmas Tree at Millenium Park (which will be staying in place until January 6th). But after you see that, what do you next? Read on to check out a few picks from your festive friends here at Continental Honda.

Note: The following events are closed on Christmas day, and with the exception of Christkindlmarket, Christmas eve too.

Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville

  • Where?  Gallagher Way, 3637 N. Clark Street, Chicago
  • When? Opens either at 11 am or 3 pm, depending on the day. Lasts until Dec. 31st

Though the Christkindlmarket in the loop only stays open uo to Christmas eve, this one in Wrigleyville is going all the way up to New Year’s Eve. There are admittedly fewer venders than in Daley Plaza, but there should be just as much enjoyment. After all, less to choose from just cuts down on selection anxiety.

Booths will be set up all around an ice rink, presenting a variety of items for purchase. Of course, there will be plenty of German foods and drinks.

  • Where? Lincoln Park Zoo, 2001 N. Clark Street, Chicago
  • When? Opens daily at 4:00 pm, lasting until Jan. 5th

Don’t expect to see many animals (they’re being kept warm inside), but do expect to see a massive amount of Christmas lights. 2.5 million bulbs, to be exact; even Clark Griswold didn’t get to that level. Visitors can wander throughout the displays, snap some photos, and indulge in a variety of seasonal activities.

Illumination: Tree Lights at Morton Arboretum

  • Where? Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle
  • When? Opens daily at 4:30 pm, until Jan. 5th

“Illumination” at Morton Arboretum is perhaps a more ethereal take on the Zoolights philosophy. Visitors can travel a one-mile path through the forest as the foliage around them is lit in a magical sea of color. Seasonal music will set the tone. At the end, weary travelers can warm up by a crackling fireplace with hot beverages and s’mores.
